Believe it or not, I actually used to hate dogs. I used to think they were slobbery, smelly and a huge pain to take care of. I mean – you have to continually walk them. lol. I don’t know how he did it, but in the few short months that we were seeing each other before we got our first puppy, my fiance showed me how amazing dogs actually are. I am now in love with them! They are furry little balls of love and cuteness and I can’t imagine my life without them.
We currently have two. (I assure you we will have more in the future).
Puppy Number One – Jackson
Jackson is a Jack Russell/Chihuahua who is 6 years old. We got him from Brookhaven Animal Shelter. He was a stray. I’m pretty sure that he is more of a mix than just those two breeds. Among many other things, he definitely looks as if he has a little Whippet in him.
A few fun facts about Jackson:
- He is extremely smart. He can open his crate, car windows, and even locked me out of our old apartment once! He also knows when we want him out of a room and REFUSES to move.
- He is an a-hole when he’s tired. At night around 8 pm, I guess in his head it’s his little puppy bed time and he goes upstairs and lays on the bed. He needs it quiet and dark or else he gets pissed. When I hug and kiss him goodnight, he growls at me, because I am interrupting his slumber. He never bites though, he just moans, so it’s actually quite funny.
- He is a total lap dog. He will jump and sit on anyone’s lap and lay down.
- He lets me do whatever I want to him. Seriously. I mess with his ears, play with his paws, roll him around – and he could care less. The only thing he gets anxious about is when we try to cut his nails.
- He LOVES cars. Now, I know that every dog loves cars (for the most part), but Jackson takes it a little further. Here are two instances in which he crossed the line.
- Vic and I take him to a park. We are playing fetch. All of a sudden, he sees a random man getting into his car, bolts up the hill, and jumps in.
- Vic and I are in our apartment and we hear a car crash. We open up the front door to look out, and Jackson busts through the door, runs down the block to the car crash, jumps in the car of the man who just got in the accident, and sits on his lap – ready to go for a ride. Luckily the man actually laughed about that one.
Puppy Number Two – Natalie
Natalie is a Chihuahua who is 3 years old. We got her from The Little Shelter. She was also a stray. And must have endured some pretty hard/scary times, because you can totally tell.
A few fun facts about Natalie:
- She is terrified of everything. When we got her, it took her a few months to completely warm up to us. She is extremely skittish, especially around people she does not know.
- She completely defies the stereotypical Chihuahua temperament. She is literally the sweetest dog I have ever met in my entire life. <3
- She likes to poop in the house. This drives me crazy. I cannot figure out her schedule, and she never tells us when she needs to go out. (Like puppies can talk – you know what I mean though)
- She is terrible at fetch. She really really really really really wants the toy, but once she gets it, she runs away with it. And doesn’t come back. And when she does come back, she does not have it anymore.
- Her “howl” is hilarious. I wish I could describe in words what this sounds like. I’ll try to get a video.
